OVERVIEW

Adam Schuman joined the firm following more than 30 years’ experience as a senior attorney in corporations, law firms, and government. Mr. Schuman serves clients in commercial, regulatory and white collar investigations and litigations.

Mr. Schuman has represented clients in all phases of litigation through trial, has conducted arbitrations and mediations, and was appointed by New York State as an independent monitor. Having held senior in-house legal roles, Mr. Schuman has counseled boards of both public and private companies, managed regulatory inquiries in the US and abroad, and addressed a wide variety of sensitive compliance and risk matters.

BIOGRAPHY

Prior to joining Petrillo Klein + Boxer in March 2023, Mr. Schuman was General Counsel of Menai Financial Group, a provider of institutional-grade digital asset services. Before joining Menai in 2021, Mr. Schuman was a partner for four years in the white collar and investigations practice at Perkins Coie, where he led the litigation department in New York.

Mr. Schuman previously served as Special Counsel for Public Integrity in the New York State Governor’s Office, where he oversaw 25 attorneys including a team of Special Counsel for Risk, Ethics and Compliance across state agencies. Earlier, Mr. Schuman led over 100 attorneys as General Counsel for New York State’s Homes and Community Renewal.

Prior to that, Mr. Schuman spent 12 years at McGraw-Hill/Standard & Poor’s, becoming Executive Managing Director and Chief Legal Officer for S&P Ratings where he supervised the legal and regulatory departments of 30 lawyers globally and was a member of the boards of its US and UK subsidiaries.

Mr. Schuman also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, where he conducted a securities fraud and money laundering trial arising out of the boiler room depicted in the film, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and received the US DOJ Director’s Award for Superior Performance. Early in his career, Mr. Schuman was a lawyer with the New York firms Paul Weiss and Corbin Silverman & Sanseverino and served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska in the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Schuman is a Board Member of the New York Convention Center Development Corporation and a Member of the Federal Bar Council Federal Criminal Practice Committee.

Mr. Schuman earned his J.D., cum laude, from New York University School of Law and received his B.A., with Honors, from Swarthmore College.

    • In 2025, Mr. Schuman favorably resolved SEC claims for a blockchain owner resulting in the settlement and dismissal with prejudice of the SEC’s case. SEC v. Nova Labs, Inc., No. 25-cv-00539 (S.D.N.Y.).
    • Following an eight-day FINRA arbitration hearing in 2024, Mr. Schuman defeated a $21 million claim against Interactive Brokers LLC, where the arbitrators awarded $0 to the claimant.
    • In 2024, Mr. Schuman commenced a whistleblower case under the Dodd-Frank Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and New York Labor Law against a credit rating agency by its former Head of Ratings and former Designated Compliance Officer. Defendants’ motion to dismiss was denied. Brawer, et seq. v. Egan-Jones Ratings Co., et seq., No. 24-cv-1895 (S.D.N.Y.).
    • In November 2023, Mr. Schuman obtained a court decision annulling a lease of the Nassau Coliseum based on violations of New York State’s Open Meetings Law and SEQRA, which was reaffirmed in August 2025 upon remand after appeal by respondents. Hofstra University v. Nassau County Planning Commission, et al., No. 606293/2023 (N.Y. Sup., Nassau Co.).
    • In 2020-2021, Mr. Schuman was appointed by New York State as the independent monitor of National Grid’s natural gas supply operations.
    • In 2019 while at Perkins Coie, Mr. Schuman obtained a multimillion-dollar verdict for a blockchain technology client following a three-week jury trial. BitClave PTE. LTD. v. Trofimchuk, 18-CV-328574 (Calif. Sup., Santa Clara Co.).
